The Centre for Intercultural Studies is a research institute at the Department of Sociology at Palacky University, Olomouc, which brings together researchers dealing with the study of the symbolic aspects of culture from a sociological perspective. Currently, the institute’s research focuses primarily on research into consumer culture, that is, the study of the meanings that are associated with the use or consumption of products and services and which are shaped by the symbolic interaction between the producers of consumer products, their promoters and their users. Its researchers also deal with the history and criticism of consumer culture and its aesthetics. Part of the centere’s research also includes a sociological description and comparison of sustainable lifestyles and philosophical analysis of new concepts of sustainable living.

Currently, we are involved in the creation of two extensive publications (New Perspectives on Consumer Culture Theory and Research, and Introduction to Consumer Culture Theory and Research) and in the organization at Palacky University of lectures and workshops focusing on the sociology of culture offered by leading international researchers.
